LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Newly obtained photographs reveal the aftermath of a stabbing allegedly carried out by Jesus Ayala, the teenager accused of a deadly crime spree in Las Vegas during the summer of 2023.

The stabbing incident near Washington Avenue and Jones Boulevard in June 2023 has led to three additional charges being filed against Jesus Ayala. A grand jury indicted Ayala in January on charges of attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon, battery with the use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm, and attempted robbery with the use of a deadly weapon.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police apprehended 18-year-old Ayala on August 14, 2023, shortly after retired California police chief Andy Probst, 64, was tragically killed while riding his bicycle. Ayala, who was 17 years old at the time, was arrested after video footage captured from inside a car went viral, appearing to show Probst being intentionally hit. Probst succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities have identified Ayala as the driver during the incident, with his co-defendant, 16-year-old Jzamir Keys, serving as the passenger.

Another hit-and-run incident involving intentional targeting of a cyclist occurred earlier that same morning, with Keys driving and Ayala occupying the passenger seat. The targeted victim, a 72-year-old man, survived the incident.

Police investigations have revealed that the teens were involved in the theft of at least three cars on that fateful day, carrying out the hit-and-run crashes in stolen vehicles.

Prior to these incidents, Ayala had a history within the juvenile system. However, in Nevada, juveniles charged with murder can be certified as adults, resulting in their cases being transferred to the adult system.

The June stabbing incident came to light after Ayala’s arrest in connection with the deadly crime spree. While in jail, Ayala denied any involvement in the stabbing when questioned by the police.

The victim recounted that the group approached him while he was taking out the trash and demanded his belongings. They proceeded to assault and stab him, resulting in injuries to his face, near his ear, and five stab wounds to his back. The victim continues to bear the physical and emotional scars from the incident.

The FBI, assisting in the investigation, utilized cell phone records to place Ayala near the scene of the stabbing.

During the crime scene investigation, the police discovered a bloodied knife. Additionally, detectives obtained video evidence from an incident the following day involving a stolen car and several of the same teenagers, further linking them to the crimes.

A jury trial has been scheduled for Ayala on September 16, while Keys’ trial is set for November 12.
