The search for a missing Ohio boy came to a devastating conclusion on Friday when Columbus police announced that they had discovered the lifeless body of 5-year-old Darnell Taylor inside a sewage drain.
Pammy Maye, the foster mother of Darnell, was taken into custody Friday morning and has been charged with kidnapping and child endangerment in connection with the case.
During a press conference following the discovery, Police Chief Elaine Bryant shared the heartbreaking news that Darnell was believed to have been found dead. She also revealed that she had contacted the prosecutor’s office to add an additional murder charge to Maye’s case.
Darnell Taylor, who was in the care of Pammy Maye, was tragically found deceased, bringing immense sadness to the community. Chief Bryant expressed her deep sorrow, stating, “This is a tragic development, and we certainly hoped for a different outcome.”
The search for Darnell was initiated after his father contacted 911, reporting that his wife had made disturbing statements that led him to believe their foster child had been harmed. According to an affidavit obtained by NBC Affiliate WCMH, Darnell’s father revealed that his wife had claimed their son was no longer alive.
During the 911 call, Maye allegedly covered her husband’s mouth and mentioned having a plan. She then fled the residence while her husband was still on the phone with emergency services. Police later discovered Maye’s abandoned 2015 Jeep Cherokee in Brooklyn, Ohio, approximately three hours after the distressing call.
Following a tip from a concerned business, officers located Maye in the vicinity. She was subsequently arrested and initially taken to the hospital for medical treatment, although the specific reasons for her hospitalization were not disclosed by Chief Bryant.
During the course of their interview with Maye, investigators were able to gather information regarding Darnell’s potential whereabouts. Acting swiftly on this new lead, the police discovered a body believed to be that of the missing 5-year-old.
Chief Bryant emphasized the desire for justice, stating, “This is not the outcome we wanted. We want to be sure to do everything we can to get justice for Darnell.”
According to Chief Bryant, Darnell had been living with the foster family since May, and authorities have made contact with his biological family. The investigation into this tragic case continues.
