MTech student of IIT Delhi found hanging in hostel room

An unfortunate incident has occurred at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, where a student was found dead in his hostel room. The 24-year-old man, identified as Sanjay Nerkar, was pursuing his MTech degree at IIT Delhi. It is suspected that he took his own life by hanging himself. This incident marks the first case of a student from IIT Delhi dying by suicide this year. The unfortunate news comes just months after a 20-year-old BTech student from the same institute was found dead at his residence in Shahdara, Delhi.

Family Concerned as Student Fails to Respond to Calls

Hailing from the Nashik district in Maharashtra, Sanjay Nerkar resided in room number 757 at Dronacharya Hostel. The tragic incident came to light when Nerkar’s family members attempted to contact him but received no response. Growing worried, they reached out to his hostel mates, urging them to check on him. A police officer stated, “Nerkar’s family members tried connecting with him on Thursday night. When he did not respond to their phone calls, the family members asked his hostel mates to check on him.”

Discovery of Student’s Lifeless Body

Following the concerns raised by Nerkar’s family, his fellow students proceeded to his room, only to find it locked from the inside. They immediately informed the hostel guard, who took prompt action and broke open the door. Tragically, the lifeless body of the student was discovered hanging from the ceiling. The police were immediately informed, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of death. At present, no suicide note has been recovered from the room.

Last year, Union Minister of State for Education (MoS) Subhas Sarkar revealed in Parliament that since 2018, a total of 33 students from various IITs, 24 from National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and four from Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have lost their lives to suicide.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the mental health challenges faced by students, especially those studying in top-tier educational institutions. It is crucial for universities and colleges to prioritize mental health support and create a nurturing environment to prevent such tragedies in the future.
