In a gruesome incident that has sent shockwaves through the residents of Purba Medinipur district in West Bengal, a 40-year-old man was arrested after being spotted walking around a bus stop while holding his wife’s severed head in one hand and a sickle in the other. The man, identified as Goutam Guchhait, created a horrifying scene by making vague and threatening remarks, covered in blood, and raising the severed head while yelling at the gathered crowd, as reported by a leading daily website.
The incident occurred on February 14, coinciding with Valentine’s Day and Saraswati Puja, a day when most people were preoccupied with festival preparations. According to police reports, Guchhait allegedly beheaded his wife, Fulrani Guchhait, due to family-related problems before proceeding to the nearby bus stop, showcasing the gruesome display, as reported by NDTV.
Local residents were left in shock as they captured the horrific scene on their mobile cameras while Guchhait continued to walk around the area. It took over an hour for the police to arrive at the scene, where they discovered the lifeless body of Fulrani Guchhait. Goutam Guchhait was immediately taken into custody, and the victim’s body was sent for post-mortem examination.
Family’s Involvement and Previous Incidents
Witnesses at the scene reported that Guchhait’s parents were also brought to the police station for questioning. Earlier, they had claimed that their son was mentally unstable, raising questions about his mental health and its potential role in the horrific crime.
This shocking incident is not the first time Goutam Guchhait has made headlines with his erratic behavior. Three years ago, he infamously jumped into a lion’s enclosure at the Alipore Zoo in Kolkata, resulting in severe injuries. Despite the presence of a 14-foot boundary wall and two net fencings, Guchhait managed to breach the enclosure and approach a lion that had come out of its den. His erratic behavior posed a danger not only to himself but also to others present at the zoo.
