A 16-year-old boy has been taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service on Thursday, in relation to a fatal shooting that occurred during rush hour at a New York City subway station earlier this week.
The teenager is one of three suspects believed to be involved in the shooting incident, according to the authorities. The incident, which took place on February 13, resulted from a dispute between two rival gangs who boarded the same train at different stations.
The unfortunate incident unfolded when the train approached an elevated Bronx station around 5 p.m. Witnesses reported that the first shots were fired on the platform, causing chaos as passengers scrambled to safety. The New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed that a total of 19 shell casings were recovered, with three of them originating from inside one of the subway cars.
Tragically, a 35-year-old man identified as Obed Beltran-Sanchez lost his life after being shot in the chest. Additionally, five other individuals, aged between 14 and 71, sustained injuries during the incident.
Following an extensive joint operation conducted by a regional fugitive task force and the NYPD, the 16-year-old suspect was apprehended in the Bronx at approximately 11 a.m. He is currently in custody, awaiting formal charges.
