William Post, Co-Creator of Pop-Tarts, Passes Away at 96

William Post, a Michigan man who played a vital role in the development of the beloved breakfast treat Pop-Tarts, has sadly passed away at the age of 96.

Post’s family obituary, released on Saturday, provided no specific details regarding his cause of death. Born and raised in Grand Rapids as one of seven children of Dutch immigrants, Post retired at the age of 56 as a senior vice president with Keebler Company and settled in Glen Arbor, Michigan.

Kellanova, formerly known as Kellogg Co., expressed their deep sadness over Post’s death in a statement released on Wednesday.

“He played an important role in co-creating the iconic Pop-Tarts brand, and we are grateful to Bill for his legacy and lasting contributions to our company,” Kellanova stated without providing further details.

The Birth of Pop-Tarts

Pop-Tarts made their debut in Cleveland, Ohio in 1964. Initially, the toaster pastry was available in four flavors: strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple-currant. The following year, Pop-Tarts were released nationwide, quickly becoming a beloved breakfast staple.

According to Post’s family, he was working as a plant manager for what would later become the Keebler Company when Kellogg executives approached him with a new product idea.

One of the executives, Kellogg chairman William LaMothe, soon became a close friend of Post. It was during this time that Post is often credited with “inventing” the Pop-Tart. However, Post himself clarified that he assembled an incredible team that developed Kellogg’s concept of a shelf-stable toaster pastry into a remarkable product that they were able to bring to market within just four months.

A Life Well-Lived

In addition to his contributions to the culinary world, Post was a devoted family man. Sadly, his wife Florence passed away in 2020. He is survived by his son, daughter, several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A service to honor Post’s life will be held on March 7 at the Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, as stated in his obituary on the Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home’s website.

William Post’s passing marks the end of an era in the breakfast industry. His dedication and innovative spirit will forever be remembered through the continued success of Pop-Tarts, bringing joy to countless households around the world.
