William Post, Co-Creator of Pop-Tarts, Passes Away at Age 96

William Post, a Michigan man who played an important role in the development of Pop-Tarts, has sadly passed away at the age of 96. His family obituary announced his passing on Saturday, although no details regarding the cause of his death were provided.

Post was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as one of seven children of Dutch immigrants. After retiring at the age of 56 as a senior vice president with Keebler Company, he settled in Glen Arbor, Michigan.

Kellanova, formerly known as Kellogg Co., expressed their deep sadness at Post’s death in a statement released on Wednesday. They acknowledged his significant contribution to co-creating the iconic Pop-Tarts brand and expressed gratitude for his lasting contributions to their company.

Pop-Tarts made their debut in 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio. Initially, the toaster pastry was sold in four flavors: strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple-currant. The following year, it was released nationwide, marking the beginning of its popularity.

From Plant Manager to Pop-Tart Innovator

According to Post’s family obituary, he was a plant manager with a company that would later become known as the Keebler Company. It was during this time that Kellogg executives approached him with the idea of creating a new product. One of these executives was William LaMothe, the chairman of Kellogg, who soon became a close friend of Post.

Although Post is often credited with inventing the Pop-Tart, his family clarifies that he assembled an exceptional team that developed Kellogg’s concept of a shelf-stable toaster pastry into a fine product. Together, they successfully brought it to market in just four months.

A Legacy Survived by Loved Ones

Post’s wife, Florence, passed away in 2020. He is survived by his son, daughter, several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A service to honor his life will be held on March 7 at the Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, as stated in his obituary on the Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home’s website.
