NEW YORK (AP) — A 16-year-old boy has been taken into custody on Thursday by the U.S. Marshals Service in connection with a deadly shooting incident at a New York City subway station during rush hour earlier this week. The arrest comes following an intense manhunt for the suspected shooters.

Background of the Incident

The shooting, which occurred on February 13, was the result of a dispute between two rival gangs who coincidentally boarded the same train at different stations. As the train pulled into an elevated Bronx station around 5 p.m., the first shots rang out, sending panic through the crowded platform. The gunfire continued as terrified passengers scrambled to safety. In total, authorities recovered 19 shell casings, including three from inside a subway car, according to New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

The Casualties

Tragically, a 35-year-old man named Obed Beltran-Sanchez lost his life after being shot in the chest. Additionally, five other individuals, ranging in age from 14 to 71, sustained injuries as a result of the incident.

Arrest of the 16-Year-Old Suspect

Following an extensive joint operation between a regional fugitive task force and the New York Police Department (NYPD), the 16-year-old suspect was apprehended at approximately 11 a.m. in the Bronx. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed the arrest and the suspect is currently in custody, awaiting formal charges.

This arrest is a significant development in the ongoing investigation, and law enforcement agencies will continue their efforts to bring the remaining two suspected shooters to justice.
