One man is dead following a deputy-involved shooting on Davisson Avenue in Orange County. More than one dozen Orange County Sheriff’s Office vehicles were blocking the area on Tuesday. The shooting left neighbors on edge.
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. –
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has released body-worn camera footage from a recent deputy-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a man who appeared to charge at deputies with a knife.
On the 6th of February, deputies were dispatched to a residence located on Davisson Avenue in Orlando following reports of a man harming himself with a knife. Initially, the 911 caller claimed that the man had taken his own life, but the situation quickly escalated.
According to the released audio from the incident, the caller can be heard saying, “He’s screaming in there. So, he didn’t kill himself. He didn’t kill himself.”
Upon arrival, two deputies approached the residence separately and engaged in a brief conversation with the 911 caller, who informed them that the man, identified as 43-year-old Decarlos Cornelius Long, was still inside the house. Bodycam footage shows the deputies cautiously approaching the front lawn of the property, when suddenly Long bursts out of the house, brandishing a knife.

In response to the imminent threat, both deputies discharged their firearms, striking Long and causing him to fall to the ground. However, the knife remained within reach.

In order to ensure the safety of Orange County Fire Rescue personnel already present at the scene, the deputies took immediate action to secure the knife. Deputy #2 kicked the large kitchen knife a safe distance away from Long, allowing medical assistance to be administered.
Described as a stainless steel kitchen knife, the weapon was found to be covered in blood, indicating Long’s prior self-harm actions.

Tragically, Long succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Fortunately, neither deputy sustained any harm during the incident.
Sheriff John Mina commented on the incident, stating, “He came out of that house to harm those deputies, and in my opinion, they really had no other choice. He was extremely agitated, holding a very large knife, and it happened in the blink of an eye.”
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has had numerous encounters at the residence over the past year, responding to various calls for arguments and disturbances. Sheriff Mina noted that Long likely had a history of “mental health issues,” which may have contributed to the tragic outcome.
A thorough investigation into the incident is currently underway to determine the full circumstances and ensure transparency.
