GRAYSLAKE, Ill. – In a shocking incident, a man who had previously been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) attacked a sheriff’s sergeant while attending a DUI impact panel in Lake County. The incident took place in unincorporated Grayslake, according to a news release by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 6:45 p.m. when the sergeant, who was present to provide security, noticed a man sleeping in the audience at the victim impact panel. The sergeant woke up the man, identified as Nicholas Goheen, 41, and informed him that he needed to stay awake in order to receive credit for attending the panel, as per the Sheriff’s Office statement.
As the sergeant spoke to Goheen, he noticed the smell of alcohol and asked him to leave. However, instead of cooperating, Goheen became increasingly agitated and pushed the sergeant. The sergeant, attempting to take Goheen into custody, faced resistance as Goheen started pushing, grabbing, and scuffling with him, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Despite the resistance, the sergeant managed to apprehend Goheen, albeit with minor injuries. He was subsequently treated at a nearby hospital and released, the Sheriff’s Office added.
Following the incident, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Goheen with two felonies – aggravated battery to a peace officer (class 2) and aggravated battery in a public place (class 3). Additionally, he faces charges of resisting arrest and obstructing identification.
Goheen is currently being held in the Lake County Jail and is expected to make his initial court appearance on Thursday morning.
