Washington: Reports have emerged from the United States of yet another Indian-origin individual becoming the victim of a fatal incident. This time, a 76-year-old motel owner in Alabama was tragically shot and killed during an altercation over a room. The victim has been identified as Pravin Raojibhai Patel, the owner of Hillcrest Motel in Sheffield. The incident occurred last week, adding to a series of recent tragedies.

A suspect, William Jeremy Moore, aged 34, was apprehended in connection with the case on February 8, according to Sheffield Police Chief Ricky Terry. As per PTI, investigating officials reported that Moore had arrived at the motel with the intention of renting a room. A dispute broke out between Moore and Patel, leading to the accused pulling out a firearm and shooting Patel.

Chief Terry stated that Moore was swiftly arrested while attempting to break into an abandoned house, and the murder weapon was recovered from his possession.

According to the report, a felony complaint indicates that Patel had asked Moore to leave the premises. As the shooter was leaving, he turned back and fired two shots into Patel’s chest. A barber working across the street confirmed hearing three gunshots and expressed shock, saying, “I can’t believe it; he was just doing his job.”

Meanwhile, the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) expressed deep sadness, shock, and outrage over this senseless act of violence against a small business owner, which cost him his life. AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel, quoted by PTI, stated, “Senseless acts of violence have no place in our communities, and our hearts are breaking for Pravin’s family, including his wife, children, and grandchildren.”

AAHOA Alabama Regional Director Sanjay M. Patel mentioned that Pravin Patel had spent over four decades in Sheffield, owning and operating the same motel. Describing Patel as a family-oriented person, he emphasized that Patel was known for his cheerful demeanor and astute business acumen.

The association expressed confidence that Alabama authorities would help the Patel family find justice.

This case adds to the ongoing concerns surrounding the recent deaths of Indian-origin residents in the US. Recently, an Indian-origin family consisting of a husband, wife, and 4-year-old twin boys were found dead at their $2 million home in California, with the police suspecting it to be a murder-suicide case.

On February 10, an Indian-origin IT-executive died from injuries sustained in an assault outside a restaurant in Washington. Prior to this incident, an Indian student was attacked by robbers in Chicago.

In another tragic case, 25-year-old Vivek Saini was brutally killed by a homeless drug addict who struck Saini’s face and head with a hammer nearly 50 times. The Ministry of External Affairs in India has stated that the government is aware of these incidents and is in communication with US authorities.
