New Delhi, Feb 15 (IANS): Arrests have been made in the case of Kelvin Kiptum’s death after his father, Samson Cheruiyot, claimed that four unknown individuals had visited their home prior to the fatal car crash, looking for the marathon world record holder.
Following Cheruiyot’s demand for a thorough investigation, the Kenyan police have confirmed that four unidentified men have been detained.
“The four individuals have been taken to Elgeyo Marakwet for further investigations,” said Keiyo South Sub County commandant Abdullahi Dahir, as quoted by K24 TV. “All of them are from Uasin Gishu County.”
Kelvin Kiptum, a 24-year-old Kenyan long-distance runner and the current marathon world record holder, tragically lost his life in a road traffic accident on Sunday. Kiptum was driving a Toyota Premio with two passengers on board – his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, and a lady identified as Sharon Kosgey. They were heading to Eldoret.
Kiptum made headlines in October 2023 when he broke the world record for the marathon distance at the Chicago Marathon. He completed the race in an impressive time of two hours and thirty-five seconds (2:00:35), surpassing the previous record set by Kenyan superstar Eliud Kipchoge.
This was not the first time Kiptum showcased his exceptional running skills. He had previously achieved remarkable times in other prestigious marathons, including the 2022 Valencia Marathon (2:01:53) and the London Marathon (2:01:25).
