Accident – Death – Obituary News :
A Deltona man was taken into custody on Wednesday after allegedly making threats to shoot a student driver and their father following a traffic incident in Volusia County, Florida. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening near a Publix store on Doyle Rd. in Deltona, prompting a response from local law enforcement.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the confrontation took place between two vehicles. The victim, who was in the passenger seat of a black Lexus, was accompanying his daughter, who was driving with a learner’s permit. The father and daughter were traveling northbound on Braddock Rd. when they mistakenly entered the intersection, believing they had the right of way.
Realizing the error, the father attempted to correct the situation and move the vehicle out of the roadway. However, in doing so, they cut off a white SUV traveling eastbound on Doyle Rd.
The driver of the SUV, later identified as 59-year-old Mark Vierra, became aggressive and began yelling at the father and daughter. Despite their attempts to explain the mistake, Vierra continued to berate them. At one point, he allegedly brandished a pistol in its holster and threatened to shoot them both.
Feeling threatened, the victim and his daughter called the authorities and provided them with the license plate information of Vierra’s SUV. Deputies traced the vehicle back to Vierra’s residence in Deltona and approached him. Vierra matched the description given by the victims and was wearing a Boston Bruins shirt.
During a pat-down, law enforcement discovered a black Ruger LCP pistol with a black holster in Vierra’s pocket. Initially denying having the gun during the incident, Vierra later admitted to having it but claimed the victims could not have seen it.
Based on statements from the victims and a witness, deputies arrested Vierra on multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm while committing a third-degree felony, and improper exhibition of a firearm.
Following his arrest, Vierra was booked into the Volusia County Jail and subsequently released on a $16,000 bond.
Impact on the Student Driver
The incident left the student driver traumatized, to the point where she no longer feels comfortable driving. This emotional impact highlights the severity of the threats made by Vierra and emphasizes the need for swift legal action.
Ensuring Public Safety
Law enforcement agencies take incidents involving firearms very seriously, as they pose a significant risk to public safety. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office acted promptly and effectively in apprehending Vierra, ensuring that he faced appropriate charges for his alleged actions.
Rebuilding Confidence in Driving
It is crucial for the victim and her family to receive support and resources to help rebuild her confidence in driving. Traumatic incidents like this can create lasting fear and anxiety, which may require professional assistance to overcome.
Legal Consequences for Vierra
If found guilty, Vierra could face severe penalties for his actions. Aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm while committing a felony, and improper exhibition of a firearm are all serious offenses under Florida law.
The arrest and subsequent legal proceedings will serve as a reminder that such behavior will not be tolerated, promoting public safety and discouraging similar incidents in the future.
