Young Admirer of Hockey Player PK Subban Dies at 20

Loïc Bydal, a young admirer of the former hockey player PK Subban, passed away at the age of 20 on February 6th. He battled Morquio’s syndrome, a rare genetic disease, which had plagued him since 2012.

Loïc’s story garnered attention, particularly from Subban, who remained an idol to him even while being treated at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The former Canadian hockey player expressed his sadness at saying goodbye to Loïc.

“We all have the potential to create a ray of light in our lives,” Subban expressed. “Loïc and I were the light in each other’s lives. This is what I can share with every child I meet. We will miss Loïc but never forget him for his smile, his laughter, and his larger than life energy.”

Loïc’s battle with Morquio’s syndrome was an example of true determination. Despite being in and out of the hospital since 2012, he pursued his studies in computer science at Cégep André-Laurendeau. His perseverance was recognized in 2022 when he received the Medal of the Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec in the “Youth” category.

Loïc’s condition, Morquio syndrome, also known as mucopolysaccharidosis type 4, is a rare genetic disorder that affects growth and development. The growth of individuals with this syndrome stops around the age of 8-10 years, resulting in a shorter stature. The exact prevalence of the disorder is not known, but it is estimated to affect between 76,000 and 640,000 people worldwide.

Individuals with Morquio syndrome experience various symptoms, including skeletal abnormalities, joint dislocation, short stature, and dental complications. The disease can also lead to complications such as cardiovascular and respiratory issues. Treatment for Morquio syndrome, including medications like Vimizim, can be costly, with prices exceeding $600,000 in 2021-2022.

A ceremony to honor Loïc Bydal will be held on February 24th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Coopérative Funéraire de l’Outaouais. The public is invited to contribute to Fund 1804, an organization that promotes academic perseverance and educational commitment to children, through their website www.fonds1804.org/donner.

Loïc’s battle with Morquio’s syndrome and his determination to pursue his studies despite the challenges he faced serve as an inspiration to others. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, laughter, and larger than life energy.
