Man Charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder and Other Felonies in Ford Heights Shooting

Ford Heights, IL – In a recent development, a 41-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and additional felonies following an intensive investigation conducted by the Cook County Sheriff’s Police. Sheriff Thomas J. Dart made this announcement earlier today.

The incident took place on the evening of January 12 in the 1300 block of East Lincoln Highway, Ford Heights. At approximately 8:53 p.m., Sheriff’s Police received a distress call reporting a shooting. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a 27-year-old female victim with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and subsequently released after her condition stabilized.

During the course of the investigation, detectives uncovered crucial information regarding the offender, who was later identified as Abel Barnes from University Park. It was revealed that Barnes had engaged in a verbal altercation with the victim and had made threats to harm her. Subsequently, Barnes brandished a handgun, shot the victim, and fled the scene.

On February 13, law enforcement authorities successfully apprehended Abel Barnes without any resistance. Following the arrest, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved felony charges against Barnes. The charges include Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with Discharge of a Firearm, and Aggravated Battery Resulting in Great Bodily Harm.

Abel Barnes appeared in court today at the Markham Courthouse, where he was ordered to be held in custody at the Cook County Jail until his next scheduled court appearance on March 5.

It is important to note that, in accordance with the legal principle of “innocent until proven guilty,” Abel Barnes should be presumed innocent until the government proves his guilt in a court of law.
