William “Bill” Post, the man behind the invention of Pop-Tarts, has sadly passed away at the age of 96, according to an obituary by Michigan’s MKD Funeral Homes.

Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Post began his career at the age of 16 washing trucks at the Hekman Biscuit Company. After serving in the Army Air Corps, he returned to the company and quickly climbed the ranks, becoming the personnel manager at the young age of 21.

It was during his time as the plant manager at Hekman, which later became known as the Keebler Company, that Post was approached by executives from Kellogg’s with an innovative idea. They wanted to develop a new product and sought Post’s expertise.

The obituary states that Post assembled a talented team that worked tirelessly to transform Kellogg’s concept of a shelf-stable toaster pastry into the iconic product we now know as Pop-Tarts. Within just four months, they successfully brought the product to market. The collaboration between Kellogg’s and Keebler continued until Kellogg’s eventually acquired the Keebler company.

Today, Pop-Tarts offers close to 100 unexpected flavors under its flaky crust, according to their website. The brand has become a staple for breakfast, snacks, and any time in between.

Kellanova, the company that currently owns Pop-Tarts, expressed their deep sadness at the news of Post’s passing. They recognized his instrumental role in co-creating the iconic brand and expressed gratitude for his lasting contributions.

Following his time at Keebler, Post worked in the corporate offices before retiring at the age of 56. He continued to serve as a consultant for the company for 20 years.

Pop-Tarts have not only become a beloved breakfast item but have also left a lasting impact on popular culture. In a viral moment, players from Kansas State University’s football team devoured a mascot during the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Comedian Paula Poundstone even dedicated an entire bit to her love of Pop-Tarts. Jerry Seinfeld, a well-known breakfast cereal enthusiast, has also incorporated Pop-Tarts into his standup routine.

In fact, Seinfeld has even discussed the possibility of making a movie.
