Former Lafayette City Marshal and Lafayette Parish Sheriff, Donald J. Breaux, Passes Away at 87
Donald J. Breaux, a respected figure in law enforcement and politics, sadly passed away on Wednesday at the age of 87. Born and raised in Lafayette, Breaux dedicated his life to serving and protecting the community.
A Life Committed to Public Service
Breaux’s career in law enforcement began with the Lafayette Police Department before he joined the Louisiana State Police in 1962. With a passion for criminal investigation, he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant with the LSP Intelligence Section and later the commander of the LSP Regional Narcotics Division.
After over 20 years in law enforcement, Breaux transitioned into politics, running for the position of Lafayette City Marshal in 1981. Following his predecessor Dallas Broussard, who had served as City Marshal for over three decades, Breaux’s dedication and leadership earned him the trust of the community. Two years later, he ran for Lafayette Parish Sheriff and won, serving four terms until his retirement in 2000.
A Lasting Legacy
Sheriff Breaux’s impact on the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office cannot be overstated. Sheriff Mark Garber, who considered Breaux not just a mentor but also a friend, acknowledged his invaluable contribution to the department. Breaux’s dedication to professionalism and national standards led the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office to become the first-ever nationally accredited correctional center in Louisiana.
Beyond his professional achievements, Breaux remained active in public service. He served as the president of the Louisiana State Troopers Association, representing 12 commanders and over 1,200 troopers. Additionally, he chaired the National Sheriffs’ Drug Enforcement Commission for the National Sheriffs’ Association. Breaux’s commitment to his community was recognized through various awards, including the Evangeline Area Boy Scouts Most Distinguished Citizen Award and the title of Outstanding Lawman for the state. In 2015, he was honored as one of Acadiana’s Living Legends by the Erath’s Acadian Museum.
A Cherished Family Man
Breaux is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Anna Belle Richard, and their three sons, Frank (Julie), Tim (Monique), and Mike (Mary). He was also blessed with nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Sadly, Breaux was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna.
The Breaux family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Woodbrair Southern Style Assisted Living, as well as Lee Wood, Nicole Hanie, Tim Metcalf, Karen Stelly with Community Hospice, Becky Leblanc, and Don’s caretaker, Valarie Brown, for their compassionate care.
Arrangements for Sheriff Breaux’s funeral are being handled by Martin & Castille Funeral Home.
Sheriff Donald J. Breaux leaves behind a lasting legacy in the Lafayette community. His dedication to public service, commitment to professionalism, and love for his family will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
