An Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot in the leg while responding to a reported disturbance in Minot on Wednesday morning. The incident took place when deputies were called to a home on Woodman Hill Road just after 4 a.m. on Valentine’s Day following a disturbance complaint.
Upon arriving at the scene, they were met with a shocking sight – the house was already engulfed in flames. Despite the dangerous situation, the deputies immediately sprang into action to ensure the safety of the homeowners.
However, amidst the chaos, gunshots were suddenly fired from a man positioned at the end of the driveway. The man, later identified as 42-year-old Corey Hamel, was discovered to be staying at the home, according to officials.
Tragically, Androscoggin Sergeant Randy Williams was shot in the leg during the incident. In addition to injuring Sergeant Williams, several vehicles were also hit by the gunfire.
Thankfully, the combined efforts of the police from Mechanic Falls and Androscoggin deputies resulted in Hamel’s capture after a confrontation. This brought an end to the immediate danger posed by Hamel.
Fortunately, Sergeant Williams is expected to survive his injuries, bringing some relief amidst the turmoil. The homeowners, on the other hand, were lucky to escape the incident unharmed.
Authorities have revealed that Hamel was on probation for three counts of violating conditional release, shedding light on his troubled past. As a result of his actions, Hamel is now facing charges of aggravated attempted murder and arson.
