Former Lafayette Parish Sheriff Don Breaux Passes Away at 87

Former Lafayette Parish Sheriff Don Breaux, a lifelong lawman and respected figure in the community, passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 87. Surrounded by his loving family, Breaux left a lasting legacy in law enforcement and public service.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Law Enforcement

Breaux began his career in law enforcement with the Lafayette Police Department before joining the Louisiana State Police force in 1962. Known for his dedication and commitment, Breaux quickly rose through the ranks, eventually serving as lieutenant with the LSP Intelligence Section and commander of the LSP Regional Narcotics Division. He retired from state police in 1980.

A Public Servant and Leader

After retiring from the state police, Breaux decided to enter public office. In 1983, he was elected as the Lafayette Parish Sheriff, succeeding City Marshal Dallas Broussard. Breaux held this position for an impressive 16 years, until his retirement in 2000.

A Mentor and Friend

Sheriff Mark Garber, in a heartfelt tribute, described Breaux as not only a mentor but also a dear friend. Garber acknowledged Breaux’s significant contributions to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, stating that he played a crucial role in shaping the department into what it is today.

Mike Neustrom, who succeeded Breaux as sheriff, also expressed his admiration and respect for his predecessor. Neustrom considered Breaux to be an honored and devoted friend and mentor to countless individuals pursuing careers in law enforcement. Breaux’s insight and opinions were highly valued, and his push for professionalism set the bar for future accreditations.

A Life of Service Beyond Law Enforcement

Beyond his career in law enforcement, Breaux remained active in public service. He served as past-president and member of the Louisiana State Troopers Association, representing numerous troopers and troop commanders. Additionally, he chaired the National Sheriffs’ Drug Enforcement Commission for the National Sheriffs’ Association.

Breaux’s dedication and contributions did not go unnoticed. He received various accolades throughout his life, including the Evangeline Area Boy Scouts Most Distinguished Citizen Award and recognition as the Outstanding Lawman for the state by The American Legion. In 2015, he was honored as one of Acadiana’s Living Legends when he was inducted into The Acadian Museum in Erath.

A Cherished Family Man

Breaux was a native of Lafayette and was married to his beloved wife, Anna Belle Richard, for 63 years. He leaves behind a lasting legacy through his three sons, Frank, Tim, and Mike, and their respective spouses. Breaux was also blessed with nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna.

Remembering a Respected Figure

The loss of Don Breaux is deeply felt within the Lafayette community and the law enforcement community as a whole. His contributions and influence will be greatly missed, and his presence will always be remembered.

The arrangements for Breaux’s funeral are pending and will be handled by Martin & Castille Funeral Home, located at 330 St. Landry St. in Lafayette.
