The decomposed body of a 25-year-old man, identified as Deepak Mansingh Thoke, was discovered on February 3, shedding light on a sinister tale of monetary dispute, violence, and betrayal.
The initial post-mortem report sent shockwaves as it revealed that Thoke’s death was not a result of natural causes. His wrists bore injury marks and blade cuts, indicating a homicidal death. The police were faced with an intricate puzzle, but crucial leads began to emerge when tattoos on the body caught their attention. The tattoos, reading ‘Rana Rajpoot’ and ‘AaiBaba’ in Marathi and English, provided a breakthrough in the case.
Determined to identify the victim, the police circulated Thoke’s photograph to all anti-narcotic cells (ANCs). Their efforts paid off when the Ulhasnagar ANC positively identified the victim through a fingerprint match. As the investigation progressed, it was revealed that Thoke was involved in the business of selling bottled water on long-distance trains. Unfortunately, his business was not without its share of troubles.
Further inquiries revealed an unsettling monetary dispute between Thoke and two other vendors, Saikumar Kadamachi and Kishore Jitendra Shetche. Thoke had been pressurizing them to pay him ‘hafta’ or protection money for selling bottled water on what he claimed as his territory. On February 1, the simmering tension escalated into violence. The duo, along with Pentya Janglya Chittari, assaulted Thoke at Chittari’s residence in Titwala. However, the assault was not the end of their merciless act. They went on to repeatedly stab Thoke before disposing of his lifeless body into the chilling depths of the Vaitarna river.
In a swift operation, the Palghar Police apprehended the three accused individuals. As they remain in police custody, the echoes of this horrifying crime continue to reverberate, serving as a stark reminder of the grave consequences that can arise from seemingly trivial disputes.
