A man was apprehended by the police in Muncie, Indiana, on Sunday after hiding in the woods and spitting on officers during an incident. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Brandon Michael Wayne Collins, faces multiple charges, including battery against a public safety official and operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) as a previous offender and habitual offender.

The incident unfolded when the police responded to a motor vehicle crash report at 4601 N County Rd 650 E at around 6:33 p.m. Upon arrival, officers interviewed residents in the area to gather information about the crash. Although it remains unclear if anyone sustained injuries in the accident, witnesses stated that they saw a man fleeing the scene on foot towards a nearby wooded area.

Investigators conducted a search of the vehicle involved in the crash and confirmed that it was unoccupied. Based on information from the witnesses, the police believed that the man they were searching for was hiding in a bush behind a residence on the same street as the accident.

With flashlights aimed at the bush, officers located Collins crouching within. However, when commanded to exit the bush, Collins refused to comply. Faced with noncompliance, an officer drew their pistol and continued giving orders, which eventually led to Collins emerging from the bushes.

Despite exiting the bush, Collins continued to ignore the officers’ commands. Eventually, he dropped to the ground on his stomach, and as the officers attempted to handcuff him, Collins started spitting on them. Throughout the process of restraining him and applying handcuffs, Collins persistently spat on the officers, requiring them to forcefully restrain him.

In an effort to prevent further spitting, the police placed a spit mask on Collins. However, even with the mask, he persisted in his attempts to spit on the officers. When EMS arrived, Collins was put on a gurney, but he seized the opportunity to spit directly on an officer’s left cheek. His combative behavior led medics to sedate him.

Officers reported detecting the smell of alcohol on Collins’ breath, and they subsequently discovered an open container in the vehicle he had fled from. As a result, Collins now faces three Level 6 Felony charges, including battery against a public safety official, OWI as a previous offender, and OWI as a habitual offender. Additionally, he has been charged with two misdemeanors—resisting law enforcement and leaving the scene of a crash.

In the state of Indiana, a Level 6 Felony carries a maximum penalty of a 2.5-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.
