TAZEWELL COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) – A devastating single-vehicle crash occurred in Tazewell County last month, resulting in the death of one passenger and leaving another seriously injured. The incident took place on Jan. 14 on Route 460, according to the Virginia State Police (VSP).
The VSP reported that at 12:19 a.m., a 2014 TC Scion traveling west veered off the road and collided with a guardrail. The vehicle then crossed back over the roadway and crashed into an embankment, causing severe damage.
The ill-fated Scion was occupied by the driver and three passengers, as confirmed by the VSP. Tragically, one of the backseat passengers, Allen Smith, a 20-year-old resident of Richlands, Virginia, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Despite efforts to save him, Smith succumbed to his injuries on Feb. 2. It is important to note that Smith was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, as stated by the VSP.
The second backseat passenger, identified only as a 16-year-old male, was wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious injuries. The VSP did not provide further details regarding the nature of his injuries, but it is evident that the crash had a significant impact on his well-being.
Fortunately, the third passenger in the Scion did not sustain any injuries during the crash, providing a small silver lining amidst the tragic circumstances.
The driver of the vehicle, Michael Meadows, a 29-year-old resident of Cedar Bluff, suffered minor injuries in the crash. However, Meadows was charged with driving under the influence by the VSP, indicating a potential factor that contributed to the accident.
