Pittsburg, NH – On Saturday, February 10, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officer received a distress call regarding a snowmobile accident that occurred in a driveway off Hillside Drive in Pittsburg. An immediate emergency response was activated involving the Pittsburg Police Department, the Pittsburg Fire and Rescue Department, and the 45th Parallel EMS to aid the injured individual.
The operator involved in the incident has been identified as Lori Bechtel, a 63-year-old resident of North Easton, MA. Bechtel was on her way back to her campsite when she encountered difficulty navigating an uphill right-hand turn on an unmaintained driveway. As a result, Bechtel lost control and veered off the driveway, colliding with a tree. The impact caused Bechtel to be thrown off her snowmobile, subsequently hitting another tree. Bechtel’s companions immediately dialed 911 for urgent assistance due to the severity of her injuries.
In order to transport Bechtel safely, she was carefully placed on a stretcher. With the assistance of the Pittsburg Fire Department’s snowmobile and rescue sled, she was then moved a short distance down the unplowed road to meet an awaiting 45th Parallel EMS ambulance. From there, Bechtel was swiftly taken to Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital (UCVH) in Colebrook for further evaluation and treatment of her injuries.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing. Initial assessments of the scene and statements from Bechtel’s fellow riders suggest that a lack of experience and momentary distraction were the primary factors leading up to the accident.
