Remembering Don Kehoe: A Life of Passion and Achievement
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Don Kehoe, a beloved figure in the world of sports journalism and government service. Don, who passed away on January 28 in Florida at the age of 88, leaves behind a legacy of dedication, perseverance, and a love for his family and community.
A Man of Many Talents and Passions
Don Kehoe was known for his outgoing nature and gregarious personality. He cherished spending time with his family, immersing himself in books, writing, enjoying music, and playing golf. His daughter, Jackie Meaney, fondly recalls his unwavering drive and work ethic, emphasizing that he never went without a job from the age of 16 until he retired from the Town of Oyster Bay.
Born in Brooklyn in 1935, Don began his career as a copy boy at the Long Island Press, where he replaced the renowned Jimmy Breslin. His time in the Army from 1954 to 1956, stationed in France, proved to be a turning point in his life. Don’s fellow servicemen, many of whom held college degrees, exposed him to a world of knowledge and dreams he had not previously considered.
Returning to the Long Island Press in 1956, Don focused on covering high school sports and pursued a freelance career as a sports writer. He married Patricia Cipullo and settled in Nesconset, raising their four children: Donna, Christine, Jacquelin, and Patrick. Don’s commitment to providing stability for his family was evident in his efforts to expose them to culture and experiences, taking them to the city to see shows, parks, and art galleries.
A Career Spanning Sports and Government Service
In 1966, Don transitioned to Newsday, where he covered a wide range of local sports, from high school football to professional bowling and tennis. One of the highlights of his career was witnessing tennis legend Arthur Ashe compete against Tony Roche in the 1966 Nassau Bowl.
After several years at Newsday, Don embarked on a new path in government service as the public information officer for the Town of Oyster Bay. Journalist Bruce Lambert, who had the privilege of working alongside Don during this time, praised his ability to provide accurate information and understand the needs of reporters. Don’s experience in navigating planning and zoning issues prepared him for his subsequent role as the director of administration and corporate affairs at the fledgling Nassau Off-Track Betting Corp. During his tenure, he handled Teamster union negotiations, combated anti-gambling community resistance, and dealt with political interference.
Don’s dedication to his community extended beyond his professional life. He actively participated in local campaigns, supporting Republican candidates and advocating for causes he believed in.
A Life Well-Lived
Following his retirement from Nassau OTB in 1997, Don married Linda and relocated to the Belfair Golf Community in South Carolina. Eventually, the couple settled in John Knox Village in central Florida in 2017.
Don’s passion for writing remained a constant throughout his life. Even after retiring, he continued writing, critiquing restaurants in his newsletter and documenting golf and community events. His son, Patrick, fondly remembers his father’s wit and sense of humor, which shone through in his writing.
When physical limitations prevented Don from playing golf, he discovered a new passion in pool, where he became known for his skill in making challenging shots.
Don Kehoe is survived by his loving wife, Linda, his children Jacqueline Meaney and Patrick Kehoe, his daughters Donna Henscheid and Christine Kehoe, and his five grandchildren.
A memorial visitation will be held on February 22, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Arthur F. White Funeral Home in Bethpage. A funeral Mass will then be celebrated on February 23 at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Martin of Tours, Bethpage.
Don Kehoe’s legacy as a dedicated sports journalist, government servant, and loving family man will forever be remembered. His contributions to his community and the impact he had on those around him will continue to inspire for years to come.
