Marathon World Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum Dies in Tragic Car Crash

Kelvin Kiptum

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder for the marathon, tragically passed away in a car accident on Sunday in Kenya. The 24-year-old running sensation was on the verge of becoming a long-distance running superstar before this untimely incident.

Kiptum, hailing from Kenya, made headlines last year when he set a world record at the Chicago Marathon. This record was officially ratified just last week by the international athletics federation World Athletics.

The young athlete and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana from Rwanda, lost their lives in the accident that took place around 11 p.m. The news of their demise was confirmed by Kenyan athlete Milcah Chemos.

The accident occurred on a road between the towns of Eldoret and Kaptagat in western Kenya. This region is renowned as a training base for long-distance runners due to its high-mountain terrain.

Upon hearing the devastating news, Chemos rushed to the hospital along with other athletes and Kiptum’s family members. The family was present at the hospital to identify Kelvin Kiptum’s body.

Reports from the Kenyan media indicate that the accident involved only one car. There was also a third person in the vehicle, a woman who sustained serious injuries and was taken to the same hospital.

Incredible Marathon Achievements

Kelvin Kiptum made history by becoming the first man to complete a marathon in an official race in less than 2 hours and 1 minute. He achieved this remarkable feat by setting a world record time of 2:00.35 in Chicago last October, surpassing the previous record held by his fellow Kenyan, marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge.

Before his tragic passing, Kiptum was scheduled to participate in the Rotterdam Marathon in April. This event would have marked his first race since breaking the world record.

Condolences Pour In

The news of Kelvin Kiptum’s death has shocked the athletics community worldwide. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe expressed his condolences in a statement, saying, “We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families, friends, teammates, and the Kenyan people.”

David Rudisha, Kenya’s two-time Olympic champion in the 800 meters, also expressed his grief on social media, stating, “This is a huge loss.”

A Promising Career Cut Short

Kelvin Kiptum’s running career showed immense promise from the very beginning. He made an immediate impact by achieving the fastest time ever for a marathon debutant, completing the Valencia Marathon in 2:01:53 in 2022. The following year, he triumphed in both the London and Chicago marathons, two of the most prestigious events in the world. Despite his youth and relative newness to the track, Kiptum had already secured three of the seven fastest marathon times in history.

Unfortunately, Kiptum’s untimely demise adds him to the list of several top Kenyan runners who have lost their lives in tragic road accidents. Names like David Lelei, Francis Kiplagat, and Nicholas Bett, all accomplished athletes, remind us of the dangers that talented runners face even off the track.

In conclusion, the world of athletics mourns the loss of Kelvin Kiptum, a gifted runner who had the potential to become a legendary figure in long-distance running. His records and achievements will forever be remembered, and his absence will be deeply felt by the entire sporting community.
