Constance Marten : “Old Bailey Reopens After Fire: Historic Courthouse Ready for Business Again!”

The Central Criminal Court, also known as the Old Bailey, was forced to shut down last Wednesday after a fire broke out in an electrical substation. This unfortunate incident caused significant disruptions to ongoing trials and proceedings.

The fire resulted in billowing black smoke engulfing the building, leading to a loss of power and plunging courtrooms into darkness. As a result, approximately 1,500 people had to be evacuated, and two individuals had to be rescued from lifts.

Upon the outbreak of the fire, four fire engines and 25 firefighters rushed to the scene. The sight of barristers in their traditional black gowns and wigs congregating at the front of the building added to the chaotic atmosphere.

With the court premises inaccessible, defendants were escorted by police through a side exit and placed in waiting prison vans to be transported back to jail. This unexpected turn of events caused further complications for the ongoing trials, including the highly publicized case of Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, who are facing charges of manslaughter in relation to their baby daughter. Additionally, the inquest into the deaths of the victims of the Reading terror attack was also affected.

Authorities from the London Fire Brigade have determined that the fire was accidental and not suspicious in nature. However, investigations into the incident are ongoing to ensure a thorough understanding of the cause.

Following emergency works to restore power, Judge Mark Lucraft KC, the Recorder of London, announced on Friday that the Old Bailey would reopen at noon on Monday. However, before normal business could resume, several health and safety checks needed to be conducted.

The Old Bailey holds a prestigious status as the world’s most renowned criminal court. Due to its role in handling significant criminal cases, including those involving murder and terrorism, the court maintains strict security measures. In fact, it has previously been identified as a high-value target for terrorist activities. Notably, the building suffered extensive damage during an IRA car bomb attack in 1973.
