OKLAHOMA CITY – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cathy Cummings, a beloved figure in the community. At the age of 62, Cathy lost her battle with incurable cancer.

Cathy Cummings was a remarkable individual who played multiple important roles in Oklahoma City. She was not only the owner of the popular Italian Restaurant, Vito’s Ristorante, but also served as a City Council member and later became the mayor of The City of the Village. Cathy was also an authoritative voice in the local Democratic Party.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Cathy was a loving wife and mother. Her husband, Sean Cummings, who owns Sean’s Irish Restaurant in the same building, took to Facebook to share the devastating news with the community. He spoke of Cathy’s exceptional qualities, describing her as a remarkable person with an unparalleled positivity that brought out the best in everyone she encountered. Cathy’s absence will undoubtedly be deeply felt by her family, friends, constituents, and customers.

The family has requested that instead of sending flowers, people who wish to honor Cathy’s memory contribute to a GoFundMe account. The funds raised will be used to alleviate school lunch debt in public schools, a cause that Cathy was deeply passionate about. This gesture serves as a poignant tribute to Cathy’s unwavering dedication to the community.

Vito’s Ristorante, or simply “Vito’s” as it was affectionately known, was not just a restaurant, but a community gathering place. Cathy’s Italian recipes, passed down from her traditional Italian family in the historic Italian section of Kansas City, were a hit among the patrons. The walls of the restaurant were adorned with family photos, giving it a personal touch that resonated with visitors.

However, it was not only the food that drew people in. Cathy’s presence and personality made Vito’s a special place. She was known for her intelligence, positivity, cheerfulness, and love for her work. Cathy’s dedication to providing a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere made Vito’s Ristorante a beloved establishment in the community.

Cathy’s passion for public service was evident throughout her life. In 2014, she ran for Lt. Governor, campaigning in person in all 77 counties, a feat that went above and beyond what most politicians have done. Although she did not win the race, the experience gained during the campaign would prove valuable in her future endeavors.

In 2017, Cathy won a City Council seat in The Village in the OKC north metro. She connected with the community by knocking on doors and listening to their concerns. Her commitment to public service was further recognized when she was chosen by her fellow council members to be the Mayor of The Village.

Cummings’ impact extended beyond the local level. In 2022, she ran for an open Oklahoma County Commissioner seat, although she was ultimately defeated. However, her contributions to the county and The Village will continue to have a lasting impact.

Plans are underway for a celebration of life event in one of the upgraded city parks in The Village, as well as a funeral mass in Cathy’s hometown of Kansas City. Further details regarding these services will be provided as they become available.

Cathy Cummings leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and community service that will be remembered for years to come. Her absence will be deeply felt by all those whose lives she touched. As we mourn her passing, let us also celebrate the extraordinary life she led and the positive impact she made on the Oklahoma City community..
