World Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum Dies in Car Accident

West Kenya: Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder in the marathon, tragically passed away on Sunday in a car accident in West Kenya. Kiptum bid farewell to this world at the young age of 24, leaving everyone in shock. According to reports, Kiptum’s coach, Gervais Hakizimana, and another female passenger were also in the car.

Kiptum’s Farewell to the World

Kelvin Kiptum’s coach, Gervais Hakizimana, also lost his life in the car accident. A female passenger who was in the car during the accident is currently reported to be injured. Kiptum and his coach were traveling from Kaptagat to Eldoret in Western Kenya on Saturday, 10th February, at around 11 PM (2000 GMT) when the car overturned. The accident occurred around 11 PM (2000 GMT), as stated by police commander Peter Mulinge. There were three people in the car, and unfortunately, two of them lost their lives, while the other was taken to the hospital. Kiptum and his coach were among the deceased.

Car Goes Out of Control

According to police commander Peter Mulinge, “Kelvin Kiptum was traveling from Kaptagat to Eldoret when his car went out of control and overturned, resulting in the deaths of Kiptum and his coach. There was also a female passenger who got injured and was taken to the hospital.” It is worth mentioning that Kelvin Kiptum won the Chicago Marathon last year in a record time of 2 hours and 35 seconds.

Kiptum’s Demise Leaves Everyone Stunned

Sebastian Coe, the President of World Athletics, expressed his shock and deep sorrow upon learning about the deaths of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana. He said, “World Athletics is deeply saddened by the passing of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana. We express our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, and the people of Kenya. We will miss them dearly.” The 45th edition of the annual Chicago Marathon saw the participation of over 49,000 professional and amateur runners from almost 100 countries, representing all American states. The marathon started and ended at Grant Park, encompassing all 29 neighborhoods of the city. Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands won the women’s race in a time of 2:13:44, which is the second fastest time in women’s marathon history and a course record for Chicago. Since its inception in 1977, the Chicago Marathon has been a platform for setting five world records, numerous national records, and countless personal bests.
