Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand Dies at 65 After Battle with Lung Cancer

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand, a champion of open-space policies and environmental protection, has passed away at the age of 65 from lung cancer, city officials announced on Saturday.

Brand, who valiantly fought stage four lung cancer for the past four and a half years, passed away on Friday evening surrounded by his loved ones, including his wife.

“He demonstrated incredible strength and resilience throughout his battle, surpassing survival expectations for his specific cancer. His determination to live, lead, and move forward was an inspiration to all who knew him,” stated a city spokesperson.

A Passionate Leader and Advocate for the Community

Bill Brand, originally from Texas, relocated to the South Bay area in 1966. He dedicated his life to serving the community he loved and was widely recognized for his commitment to open spaces and environmental causes. In 2017, he was elected as the Mayor of Redondo Beach after serving two terms on the city council. He was re-elected for a second term in 2021, all while undergoing cancer treatments.

Brand’s passion for preserving the natural beauty of the South Bay led him to establish the South Bay Parkland Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing parkland in the area.

Remembering a Resilient Leader

Flags at City Hall will be flown at half-staff to honor Mayor Brand’s memory.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, a close friend of Brand, expressed her sorrow and admiration for him. “Elected office can be challenging, but being Mayor of Redondo Beach came naturally to Bill. He fought tirelessly to preserve our beach community from corporate developers while still finding time for the simple joys of life, like catching a wave,” Hahn shared.

Torrance Mayor George K. Chen also praised Brand’s commitment to local control and environmental conservation. “He was not only a dedicated public servant but a passionate leader in coastal preservation. His collaboration with the city of Torrance on regional infrastructure projects showcased his dedication to the entire South Bay region,” said Chen.

A Lasting Legacy

The details of the memorial services for Mayor Brand will be announced in the near future, both for private and public ceremonies. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the South Bay Parkland Conservancy or the Cancer Support Community South Bay, in honor of Brand’s memory and his dedication to the causes he held dear.

Bill Brand’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and admired him. His legacy as a resilient leader, dedicated environmentalist, and community advocate will continue to inspire generations to come.
