Authorities in Port Arthur are currently investigating an incident that resulted in the tragic death of a 27-year-old man who was found shot in his vehicle on Procter Street around 1:30 am on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Toryne Mitchell from Port Arthur, was rushed to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas, where he was later pronounced dead.
Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Jr. has ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso has labelled the incident as suspicious pending a thorough investigation.
Although witnesses have suggested the shooting was accidental, the police are treating it as suspicious until all aspects are fully examined.
Meanwhile, in the same vicinity, shots were heard coming from an establishment located at 711 Procter St.
Law enforcement officers responded swiftly and discovered two men with gunshot wounds to their legs.
Surprisingly, neither victim expressed a desire to pursue legal action against the perpetrator.
A suspect, identified as 27-year-old Herbert Mouton, was apprehended at the scene, and a firearm was confiscated from him.
Mouton has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Questions have been raised about how the suspect managed to enter the premises armed, especially since the establishment reportedly has private security at the entrance.
Earlier that evening, at approximately 1 am, Port Arthur police sought assistance from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to disperse a large crowd gathered in the parking lot of the Bob Bowers Civic Center following a reunion event for the Memorial High School Class of 2014.
An ambulance was dispatched for a female attendee, but upon arrival, emergency medical services personnel were unable to locate her.
In anticipation of after-parties following the reunion, law enforcement officers had made plans to visit another location when the call for the Procter Street incidents came in.
Chief Duriso is urging anyone with information, as well as individuals in possession of cell phone footage or security camera recordings related to the incidents on Procter Street, to come forward and assist the authorities by contacting the police department at 409-983-8600.
