UTICA, N.Y. — The Utica Police Department has made public the body camera footage capturing the tragic incident that led to the death of 13-year-old Nyah Mway on June 28.
The footage, captured from multiple angles, shows the confrontation between the officers and Mway and another juvenile on the 900 block of Shaw St. It escalates as Mway attempts to flee, prompting one of the officers to fire a fatal shot.
The officers involved in the incident have been identified by the department. Among them is Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran of the Utica Police Department, who discharged his duty weapon, resulting in the tragic outcome.
Additionally, Bryce Patterson, a four-year veteran, and Andrew Citriniti, a two-and-a-half-year veteran who previously served with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, were also present during the confrontation.
Following the shooting, officers recovered a replica GLOCK 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine at the scene.
New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation to Probe Mway’s Death
The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Mway’s death.
The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is tasked with investigating incidents involving the use of lethal force by police officers or peace officers, including corrections officers. If OSI’s investigation uncovers evidence of criminal wrongdoing, it will present its findings to a grand jury.
