Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A shocking incident unfolded in Utica, upstate New York, as body camera footage released today shows a police officer fatally shooting a 13-year-old boy who had been knocked to the ground after fleeing police and pointing a replica gun at them.

The tragic event took place shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday when officers in Utica arrested two 13-year-old boys in connection with an armed robbery investigation. The boys matched the descriptions of the suspects and were in the same area at the same time the next day, with one of them violating state traffic laws by walking down the street.

Body camera footage captured the moment when one of the boys, identified as Nyah Mway, fled as an officer attempted to pat them down to ensure they were not carrying weapons. The video shows Nyah Mway pointing the replica gun at the pursuing officers before a fatal shot was fired.

Authorities later confirmed that the gun Nyah Mway was carrying was a replica Glock 17 Gen 5 pistol with a detachable magazine. Despite the initial belief that it was a real handgun, it was determined to only fire pellets or BBs.

Chaotic Scene Unfolds in Utica

The video posted on social media by a bystander shows a police officer chasing Nyah Mway, tackling him to the ground, and punching him as two other officers arrive at the scene. A gunshot is heard while the teen is on the ground, and the officers quickly react.

The officer who fired the fatal shot was identified as Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran of the agency. Following the incident, Husnay, along with officers Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti, were placed on paid administrative leave.

During a public safety statement, Husnay stated that he fired a round directly into the ground and believed the weapon Nyah Mway was carrying to be a .22-caliber handgun. The release of the body camera videos sparked public outcry and rocked the city of Utica.

Tragic Loss of a Young Life

Nyah Mway, an eighth-grade student at Donovan Middle School, was identified as a Myanmar-born refugee and a member of the Karen ethnic minority. The Karen are an ethnic group involved in the fight against the military rulers of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.

As the news of the shooting spread, Utica Mayor Michael Galime, along with an interpreter, struggled to address the audience during a tense news conference that ended prematurely due to repeated outbursts. Members of the community, including the young man’s family, were present.

The Utica Police Department is conducting an internal investigation to determine if officers followed protocols and training. Additionally, the state attorney general will open a separate case to assess the justification of the shooting.

Chief Mark Williams expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the tragic and traumatic nature of the incident for everyone involved.
