Initially, the officers believed that Nyah Mway was armed with a real handgun. However, upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the weapon was actually a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine. Despite the weapon being non-lethal, the situation escalated quickly, resulting in a devastating outcome.
Following the shooting, Nyah Mway was rushed to Wynn Hospital for emergency medical treatment but, tragically, succumbed to his injuries. The police department expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased and acknowledged the gravity of the situation.
In response to public outcry and community distress, the police department released the body camera footage to provide transparency and context to the tragic event. The footage, which was also shared on social media, sparked widespread discussion and debate about police conduct and the use of force in such situations.
Nyah Mway, an eighth-grade student at Donovan Middle School, was a refugee from Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic group. The Karen people have been embroiled in conflicts with Myanmar’s military government, which escalated in 2021 following a coup that overthrew the democratically elected government.
The city of Utica, with a population exceeding 65,000, is home to a significant number of individuals from Myanmar, including Nyah Mway and his family. The tragic incident has deeply affected the community and highlighted the need for greater understanding and dialogue around issues of police accountability and community relations.
As the investigation into the shooting continues, Officers Husnay, Patterson, and Citriniti have been placed on administrative leave with pay.
