Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a tragic incident in upstate New York, a police officer fatally shot a 13-year-old boy who had been tackled to the ground after running from police while carrying a replica handgun, authorities revealed on Saturday.

The shooting took place around 10:15 p.m. on Friday after officers stopped two youths for an unspecified “police investigation,” Utica Police Chief Mark Williams announced. One of the youths, identified as Nyah Mway, allegedly fled from the officers and brandished a handgun that was later confirmed to be a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine. During a struggle on the ground with the teenager, one of the officers discharged a single shot that struck the boy in the chest, Chief Williams disclosed.

The teen received immediate first aid from the officers and was rushed to Wynn Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries, the chief added.

Describing the replica gun carried by the teenager, Lt. Michael Curley, a police spokesperson, explained via email that it “is in all aspects a realistic appearing firearm with GLOCK markings, signatures, detachable magazine, and serial numbers. However, ultimately it fires only pellets or BB’s.”

A video captured by a bystander and shared on Facebook shows one of the officers pursuing Nyah Mway and tackling him to the ground. The footage also depicts the officer striking the teenager as two additional officers arrive at the scene. A gunshot is heard while the teen is on the ground, and the officers swiftly stand up.

Chief Williams cautioned that the bystander video does not provide a complete portrayal of the event.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay, although their names have not been disclosed at this time.

The shooting has deeply affected Utica, a city located approximately 240 miles (400 kilometers) northwest of Manhattan, which is home to over 4,200 individuals from Myanmar, as per The Center, a nonprofit organization that assists in the resettlement of refugees.

Nyah Mway, reportedly an 8th-grade student at Donovan Middle School, has been identified as a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority.

The Karens are among the ethnic minorities engaged in conflict with the military rulers of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. The military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021 and suppressed widespread nonviolent protests calling for a return to democratic governance.

During a tense press conference on Saturday, Chief Williams refrained from revealing the reason for the police stop or the nature of the investigation. The press conference concluded prematurely as Williams, the city’s mayor, and an interpreter struggled to communicate over repeated outbursts from the audience, including members of the community and the youth’s family present.

Chief Williams pledged to release unedited footage from the officers’ body-worn cameras but had not done so by Saturday evening.

The police department is conducting an internal investigation to determine whether the officers adhered to protocols and training standards. The state attorney general, who did not respond to inquiries on Saturday, will commence their own investigation to ascertain the justification for the shooting.

“I extend my sincere condolences to the family of the deceased individual during this challenging time,” Chief Williams expressed. “This is a tragic and distressing incident for all those involved.”
