Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer in upstate New York after he ran from the authorities while carrying a replica handgun. The incident took place around 10:15 p.m. on Friday in Utica, New York, after officers stopped two youths for a police investigation, according to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams.

The boy, identified as Nyah Mway, allegedly fled from the officers and brandished a replica handgun that was later identified as a Glock 17 Gen 5 replica with a detachable magazine. A struggle ensued between the teen and the officers, leading to one of the officers firing a single shot that tragically struck the boy in the chest. Despite receiving immediate first aid from the officers and being rushed to Wynn Hospital, the young boy succumbed to his injuries.

Lt. Michael Curley, a police spokesperson, confirmed that the replica gun carried by the teen closely resembled a real firearm, complete with GLOCK markings, detachable magazine, and serial numbers. However, it was designed to only fire pellets or BB’s.

A video captured by a bystander and posted on Facebook shows the intense moments leading up to the shooting, with one officer chasing and tackling Nyah Mway to the ground. The footage also captures the officer striking the teen as additional officers arrive at the scene. A gunshot rings out as the boy is on the ground, prompting the officers to quickly stand up.

Chief Williams urged caution when interpreting the bystander video, noting that it may not provide a complete picture of the incident. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending further investigation.

The tragic shooting has sent shockwaves through the community of Utica, a city known for its diverse population, including a significant number of refugees from Myanmar. Nyah Mway, reportedly an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was identified as a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority.

The Karens are an ethnic minority group engaged in conflict with the military rulers of Myanmar, following the ousting of the elected government in 2021. The suppression of peaceful protests seeking a return to democratic rule has led to heightened tensions within the country.

During a tense press conference, Chief Williams refrained from disclosing the reasons behind the initial police stop or the nature of the investigation. The conference was cut short as community members, including the youth’s family, expressed their emotions and concerns.

As investigations continue, the police department is reviewing the actions of the officers to ensure compliance with policies and training. The state attorney general is expected to open a separate inquiry to determine the justification of the shooting.

Chief Williams extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of Nyah Mway, acknowledging the profound impact of the incident on all involved. The community remains in mourning as they seek answers and justice for the tragic loss of a young life.
