The Tragic Shooting of a 13-Year-Old Boy in Upstate New York

A 13-year-old boy, identified as Nyah Mway, was fatally shot by police in upstate New York on Friday night following a foot chase in a residential neighborhood. The incident occurred after officers stopped two teenagers while investigating a series of robberies in the area.

The Utica Police Department reported that the officers approached the teens because they matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were in the vicinity of the previous robbery at a similar time of day.

During the encounter, one of the teenagers fled on foot, leading to a chase. Police Chief Mark Williams stated that as the victim ran, officers observed what appeared to be a handgun in his possession.

In response to the perceived threat, an officer discharged his firearm, fatally shooting Mway. The teenager was provided with immediate first aid before being transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Subsequent investigation revealed that the weapon carried by Mway was actually a pellet gun designed to resemble a Glock 17 handgun.

Officer Patrick Husnay, a veteran of the department, was identified as the individual who fired the fatal shot. Body camera footage captured the events leading up to the shooting, showing Mway allegedly pointing the replica gun at pursuing officers before the confrontation.

The footage also depicted a brief struggle between Mway and the officers, culminating in the single shot fired by Husnay. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities seek to gather more information and witness testimonies.
