Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Police officers in Utica, New York, fatally shot a 13-year-old boy on Friday night following a foot chase in a residential neighborhood. The incident occurred after the teen displayed what appeared to be a gun, which was later determined to be a replica handgun.

The authorities were investigating several recent robberies in the area when three officers stopped two teenagers at around 10 p.m. local time. During the questioning, one of the teens fled on foot, prompting the officers to give chase.

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams stated in a news conference that as the teen ran, the officers saw what appeared to be a handgun. One of the officers, identified as Patrick Husnay, fired his gun and struck the teen, who was later identified as Nyah Mway, an Asian male.

Mway was given immediate first aid by the officers on the scene and was transported to Wynn Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. It was later revealed that the replica handgun found in Mway’s possession was a pellet gun resembling a Glock 17 handgun with a detachable magazine.

Officer Involved and Investigation

Officer Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran of the department, was the one who discharged his firearm, resulting in Mway’s death. Two other officers, Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti, were also involved in the incident. The officers had been patrolling the area in response to recent robberies involving Asian males brandishing a black firearm and forcibly stealing property from victims.

Body camera footage from all three officers was released by the police, along with a photo of the replica handgun recovered at the scene. The footage shows Mway fleeing from the officers and briefly pointing the replica gun at them before being tackled by Patterson and shot by Husnay.

The New York attorney general’s office has opened an investigation into the shooting, while the Utica police department is conducting its own internal investigation. All three officers have been placed on paid administrative leave following the incident.

Community Response and Ethnicity

Utica Mayor Michael Galime called for calm during a tense news conference, where an interpreter was present to translate for Mway’s family and community members. The city of Utica has resettled a significant number of refugees in recent years, including a large population of Asian refugees from Burma, Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia.

Dr. Kathleen Davis, the interim superintendent of Utica City School District, expressed condolences for the tragedy and highlighted the challenges faced by the community, especially in ensuring safety on the streets. Utica, with a population of about 65,000, is located approximately an hour’s drive from Syracuse.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and difficulties faced by law enforcement in maintaining public safety in diverse communities like Utica. The tragic loss of a young life has sparked outrage and calls for accountability, as authorities work to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
