Accident – Death – Obituary News : An officer in upstate New York fatally shot a 13-year-old who was running with a “realistic appearing firearm,” authorities said Saturday. Utica Police Chief Mark Williams revealed that the shooting took place on Friday night after officers in the city, located around 240 miles northwest of Manhattan, stopped two youths shortly after 10 p.m.

During a news conference at Utica City Hall, Williams explained that one of the youths fled on foot and pointed what seemed to be a handgun at the officers. In response, one of the officers fired a single shot at the teen during a ground struggle, hitting him in the chest. The teen, identified as Nyah Mway, a 13-year-old Karen refugee born in Myanmar and an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was given immediate first aid by the officers and transported to Wynn Hospital, where he tragically passed away.

Utica, a city with more than 65,000 residents situated along the Mohawk River, is home to over 4,200 people from Myanmar, according to The Center, a nonprofit organization that assists in the resettlement of refugees. Karens, an ethnic minority group, have been involved in conflicts with the military rulers of the country previously known as Burma. The military seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021 and suppressed widespread nonviolent protests seeking a return to democratic rule.

Kathleen Davis, the interim superintendent of the Utica City School District, expressed condolences to the victim’s family in an online statement, describing the loss as “tragic and senseless.” She also extended support to law enforcement partners who work tirelessly to maintain safe streets.

Williams declined to provide further details about the events leading up to the shooting, indicating that this information would be part of the ongoing investigation. Officers recovered a replica of a GLOCK 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine at the scene, confirming that the weapon appeared realistic but only fired pellets or BB’s.

The police chief confirmed that the New York State Attorney General’s Office will lead the investigation to determine the justification of the shooting. Additionally, the police department will conduct an internal investigation to assess whether the officers followed protocols and training. The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave with pay as per standard procedure.

Mayor Michael Galime assured transparency in the investigation process and pledged to meet privately with the teen’s family and community members to address their concerns. He emphasised the city’s commitment to providing all relevant information to the public and ensuring that everyone understands the circumstances of the incident.

In conclusion, Williams expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family and acknowledged the emotional impact of the tragic event. He highlighted the complexity of the situation and urged caution when viewing videos of the incident circulating on social media, as they may not capture the full context. The community and the family of the victim are at the forefront of the department’s thoughts during this challenging time..
