Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Locals in Utica gathered for a solemn vigil while others took to the streets in protest against the New York police after a tragic incident on Friday night. The community was left shocked and outraged after a 13-year-old boy, identified as Nyah Mway, was shot and killed by police officers.

Authorities reported that the teen, a Karen refugee from Myanmar, was involved in a police encounter where he displayed what appeared to be a gun. It was later discovered that the weapon was a replica.

According to a news release issued by the Utica Police Department, the incident unfolded when three officers stopped two teenagers around 10 pm on Friday as part of an investigation into recent robberies in the area. During the questioning, one of the teens attempted to flee on foot.

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams stated during a press conference that as the teenager ran, officers perceived a handgun in his possession. In a tense moment, one of the officers fired his weapon, striking the boy who was described as an Asian male.

The tragic event sparked a wave of emotions among community members, who voiced their anger and disbelief during the press conference. The officer responsible for the fatal shooting was identified as Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran of the Utica Police Department, with officers Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti also involved in the incident.

After the shooting, officers recovered a pellet gun resembling a Glock 17 handgun with a detachable magazine at the scene. The police later confirmed that the replica gun was indeed a pellet gun, not a real firearm.

Investigations and Reactions

The New York attorney general’s office announced that it has launched an investigation into the shooting, while the Utica Police Department stated that they are conducting their own internal investigation. All three officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.

During the press conference, an interpreter was present to assist the victim’s family and community members, highlighting the diverse demographic landscape of Utica. The city has resettled a significant number of refugees in recent years, including the Karen ethnic group from Burma, as well as Vietnamese, Thai, and Cambodian refugees, among others.

Utica Mayor Michael Galime intervened to urge calm and emphasised the importance of understanding every aspect of the situation. The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees noted that over 19% of Utica’s population is foreign-born, reflecting the city’s rich cultural diversity.

Dr. Kathleen Davis, interim superintendent of Utica City School District, commented on the incident, acknowledging the challenges faced by the community and expressing support for law enforcement efforts to ensure public safety.

As the investigation continues, the Utica community remains in mourning, seeking justice and answers in the wake of this tragic loss.
