Accident – Death – Obituary News : NEW YORK (AP) — A tragic incident unfolded in upstate New York when a 13-year-old boy, Nyah Mway, was fatally shot by a police officer after a chase and struggle, authorities revealed on Saturday. The incident took place around 10:15 p.m. on Friday in Utica, where officers had stopped two youths for an unspecified police investigation.

According to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams, Mway ran from the officers and brandished a replica handgun, later identified as a Glock 17 Gen 5 replica with a detachable magazine. During a physical altercation with the teen, one of the officers discharged a single shot that struck Mway in the chest. Despite receiving immediate first aid from the officers and being rushed to Wynn Hospital, the young boy succumbed to his injuries.

The replica gun carried by Mway closely resembled a real firearm, complete with GLOCK markings, detachable magazine, and serial numbers. However, it was designed to only fire pellets or BB’s, as confirmed by Lt. Michael Curley, a police spokesperson.

A bystander’s video, which surfaced on Facebook, captured the intense moments leading up to the tragic shooting. It shows one of the officers pursuing Mway, tackling him, and engaging in a physical struggle. The video also captures a gunshot being fired as Mway is on the ground, with officers swiftly reacting to the situation. Chief Williams cautioned that the video may not present the full context of the events that unfolded.

Following the incident, the officers involved were placed on administrative leave with pay. The shooting has stirred emotions in Utica, a city home to a significant population of refugees from Myanmar, including the Karen ethnic minority to which Mway belonged.

Mway, described as an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen community. The Karens are among the ethnic groups in Myanmar engaged in conflicts with the military regime that ousted the elected government in 2021.

During a tense press conference, Chief Williams refrained from disclosing the reasons for stopping the youths or the nature of the police investigation. The community, including Mway’s family, was present at the conference, which ended prematurely due to disruptions from the audience. Williams pledged to release unedited footage from the officers’ body-worn cameras, although it had not been made public by Saturday evening.

The Utica Police Department is conducting an internal investigation to determine if the officers adhered to protocols and training standards. Additionally, the state attorney general’s office will initiate its own investigation to ascertain the justifiability of the shooting.

In a statement, Chief Williams extended his condolences to Mway’s family, acknowledging the tragic and traumatic nature of the incident for all involved. The community awaits further developments as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting progress.
