Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Locals in Utica gathered for a vigil and protest against the New York Police Department following the tragic death of a 13-year-old boy on Friday night. The teen, identified as Nyah Mway, was a refugee from Myanmar belonging to the Karen ethnic group.

The incident occurred when three officers stopped two teenagers as part of an investigation into recent robberies plaguing the area. During the encounter, one of the teens, later identified as Mway, fled on foot, prompting the officers to give chase.

Replica Gun Misidentification

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams stated during a press conference that as Mway ran, officers mistook a replica gun for a real firearm. The officers believed Mway was armed and one of them, Officer Patrick Husnay, fired his weapon, fatally injuring the teenager.

It was later revealed that the gun Mway was carrying was a pellet gun designed to resemble a Glock 17 handgun. Despite being a replica, the officers perceived it as a threat in the heat of the moment.

Body Camera Footage

Body camera footage released by the police shows the moments leading up to the shooting. Mway can be seen fleeing from the officers and briefly pointing the pellet gun in their direction. Within seconds of the chase beginning, Officer Bryce Patterson tackled Mway, leading to the fatal shot fired by Officer Husnay.

Community Outrage and Investigations

The incident has sparked outrage within the Utica community, with many questioning the use of lethal force against a teenager carrying a replica gun. The New York attorney general’s office has initiated an investigation into the shooting, while the Utica Police Department has placed all three officers involved on paid administrative leave.

Utica Mayor Michael Galime has urged calm and emphasised the need for a thorough understanding of the events leading to Mway’s death. The city of Utica has a significant refugee population, including many Asian refugees from Burma, highlighting the diverse demographic landscape of the area.

Support for Law Enforcement Efforts

Dr. Kathleen Davis, interim superintendent of the Utica City School District, has expressed support for law enforcement efforts to maintain safety in the community. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by both law enforcement officers and the residents of Utica.

As investigations continue and the community mourns the loss of Nyah Mway, questions remain about the use of force by police officers and the need for greater understanding and dialogue between law enforcement and the diverse population of Utica.
