In a tragic turn of events, a police officer in upstate New York fatally shot a 13-year-old boy who had been tackled to the ground after running from the police while carrying a replica handgun. The incident took place in Utica, a city located about 240 miles northwest of Manhattan, during an armed robbery investigation, authorities revealed on Saturday.

According to police reports, the two youths, both 13, who matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects, were stopped by officers. One of the teens, identified as Nyah Mway, attempted to flee, prompting the officers to give chase. A body camera video released by the police captured the moment when Mway pointed the replica gun at the pursuing officers, leading to the fatal confrontation.

The officers believed the replica gun in Mway’s possession was a real handgun, but it was later determined to be a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 with a detachable magazine. Despite this revelation, a single shot fired during a struggle with Mway proved fatal, striking the boy in the chest. He was rushed to Wynn Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The police department identified the officer who fired the fatal shot as Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran of the agency. Following the incident, Husnay, along with Officers Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti, were placed on administrative leave with pay pending further investigation.
