A shocking incident unfolded in Utica, New York, as a 13-year-old Burmese refugee, Nyah Mway, was fatally shot by a police officer after allegedly pointing a replica handgun at them. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community and raised questions about police conduct.

The incident occurred late Friday when officers stopped two youths matching the descriptions of armed robbery suspects. Nyah Mway, along with another 13-year-old, was in the vicinity and attempted to flee from the police, leading to the fatal confrontation.

According to police reports, Nyah Mway was seen running away from the officers and brandishing what appeared to be a real handgun. The officers, believing it to be a genuine threat, fired a single shot that tragically struck the teenager in the chest.

The body camera footage released by the police captures the tense moments leading up to the fatal shooting. The video shows Nyah Mway running and allegedly pointing the replica gun at the pursuing officers, prompting the fatal response.

Following the incident, Nyah Mway was rushed to Wynn Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The police clarified that the replica gun carried by the teen closely resembled a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun but only fired pellets or BB’s.

The officer involved in the shooting, identified as Patrick Husnay, has been placed on administrative leave along with two other officers pending an internal investigation. The tragic death of Nyah Mway has sparked outrage and calls for justice in the community.

Nyah Mway, a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority, was a student at Donovan Middle School in Utica. The Karen community has faced persecution and conflict in Myanmar, leading many to seek refuge in the United States.

The tragic shooting of Nyah Mway has raised concerns about police use of force and the treatment of minority communities. The New York Police Department is conducting an internal investigation, while the state attorney general’s office is also reviewing the case to determine if the shooting was justified.
