NEW YORK — Disturbing video footage released over the weekend shows a heart-wrenching incident in upstate New York where a 13-year-old boy lost his life in a fatal police shooting. The incident took place in Utica, a city located approximately 240 miles northwest of Manhattan.

According to the police report, the tragic event unfolded a little after 10 p.m. on a Friday night when officers were investigating an armed robbery case. Two 13-year-old boys, who matched the description of the suspects, were stopped by the police. One of the boys, identified as Nyah Mway, attempted to flee from the officers.

The body camera footage captured the moment when Nyah Mway pointed a replica handgun at the pursuing officers. The officers, believing it to be a real firearm, responded by tackling the boy to the ground. In the ensuing struggle, an officer, later identified as Patrick Husnay, fired a single shot that tragically struck Nyah Mway in the chest.

Despite receiving immediate first aid from the officers, Nyah Mway succumbed to his injuries at Wynn Hospital. It was later revealed that the replica handgun carried by the teenager was a non-lethal weapon designed to fire pellets or BBs.

Community Outcry and Investigation

The release of the body camera footage sparked outrage within the Utica community, leading to demands for transparency and accountability in the investigation. Nyah Mway, described as an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority.

Karens are a minority group embroiled in the political turmoil in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. The military coup in 2021 led to widespread protests and violence, with minority groups like the Karens facing persecution from the ruling authorities.

The Utica Police Department has initiated an internal investigation to review the actions of the involved officers and determine if proper protocols were followed. Additionally, the state attorney general’s office will conduct its own inquiry to ascertain the justification behind the use of lethal force.

Condolences and Calls for Justice

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams expressed his condolences to Nyah Mway’s family and acknowledged the tragic nature of the incident. “This is a heartbreaking and traumatic event for all parties involved,” Chief Williams stated.
