Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A tragic incident unfolded in Utica, upstate New York, when a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer after running from the police and pointing a replica handgun at them. The incident occurred a little after 10 p.m. on Friday, as officers in the city were investigating an armed robbery case.

Details of the Incident

The two youths, both 13 years old, matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were in the vicinity at the time of the incident. One of the youths, identified as Nyah Mway, was seen walking in the road, a violation of state traffic laws. When officers attempted to pat them down to ensure they were not armed, Nyah Mway fled the scene.

Body camera footage released by the police shows Nyah Mway pointing what appeared to be a handgun at the pursuing officers. The officers, believing it to be a real firearm, reacted by firing a single shot that struck the boy in the chest. It was later revealed that the weapon was a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun, which only fires pellets or BBs.

Aftermath and Investigation

Following the shooting, Nyah Mway was immediately given first aid by the officers and taken to Wynn Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. The officers involved, including Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti, were placed on administrative leave with pay.

The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many questioning the use of force by the officers. The police department is conducting an internal investigation to determine if the officers followed proper protocols and training. Additionally, the state attorney general will be opening a case to investigate whether the shooting was justified.

Community Response

Utica, a city with a population of 65,000, is home to a significant number of refugees from Myanmar. Nyah Mway, a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority, was a student at Donovan Middle School. The Karen people are among the ethnic groups in Myanmar who have been in conflict with the military rulers of the country.

A tense news conference was held in Utica, where community members, including Nyah Mway’s family, expressed their grief and demanded justice for the young boy. Utica Police Chief Mark Williams offered his condolences to the family and acknowledged the tragic nature of the incident.

Conclusion

As the community in Utica grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, questions continue to linger about the use of force by law enforcement officers. The investigation into the shooting will shed light on the circumstances that led to Nyah Mway’s untimely death and determine the accountability of the officers involved.
