In a tragic incident in upstate New York, a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer after he ran from the authorities and pointed a replica handgun at them. The incident occurred in Utica, about 240 miles northwest of Manhattan.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the teen, identified as Nyah Mway, was tackled to the ground by officers after he attempted to flee. The officers had stopped Nyah Mway and another 13-year-old boy in connection with an armed robbery investigation. The boys matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were found in the same area where the crime took place.
Body camera footage released by the police shows Nyah Mway running away from the officers and pointing the replica handgun at them during the pursuit. The officers, believing it to be a real firearm, responded with force. One of the officers, Patrick Husnay, fired a single shot that struck Nyah Mway in the chest.
Replica Gun Misidentified as Real
It was later determined that the handgun carried by Nyah Mway was a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 with a detachable magazine. Despite its realistic appearance with Glock markings and serial numbers, the weapon only fired pellets or BBs. Unfortunately, the officers mistook it for a genuine firearm in the heat of the moment.
Community Outrage and Investigations
The shooting has sparked outrage in the Utica community, particularly among the refugee population. Nyah Mway, a refugee from Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority, was a student at Donovan Middle School. The Karen people have been involved in conflicts with the military rulers of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.
Following the incident, the police department has initiated an internal investigation to determine if the officers acted in accordance with policies and training. Additionally, the state attorney general will conduct a separate investigation to assess the justification of the shooting.
