Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The recent incident in Utica, upstate New York, where a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer has shocked the community and sparked outrage. The boy, identified as Nyah Mway, was involved in a confrontation with officers after running from the police and pointing a replica handgun at them.

The tragic event unfolded late Friday night when officers in Utica stopped Nyah Mway and another youth for a police investigation. According to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams, Nyah Mway fled from the officers and brandished what appeared to be a real handgun. In the ensuing struggle, an officer fired a single shot that struck the boy in the chest.

Despite receiving immediate first aid from the officers and being rushed to Wynn Hospital, Nyah Mway succumbed to his injuries. The firearm wielded by the teenager was later revealed to be a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun, designed to fire only pellets or BB’s.

The release of a bystander video on social media platform Facebook has further intensified the public outcry. The footage shows officers chasing and apprehending Nyah Mway, with one officer delivering punches to the teenager. A gunshot can be heard as the boy is on the ground, leading to swift reactions from the officers present.

Nyah Mway, reported to be an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was a refugee from Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority. The Karens are embroiled in conflict with the military regime in Myanmar, which seized power from the elected government in 2021, sparking widespread protests.

Following the incident, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay. The Utica Police Department has released body camera footage of the event in response to community demands for transparency.

State Investigations Underway

State authorities, including the state attorney general, have initiated investigations into the shooting to determine its legality and adherence to police protocols. The city of Utica, home to a significant population of refugees from Myanmar, is reeling from the tragedy and seeking answers.

Police Chief Mark Williams expressed his condolences to the family of Nyah Mway, acknowledging the traumatic nature of the incident for all parties involved. As the investigations unfold, the community awaits further developments and calls for accountability.
