According to police reports, officers in Utica stopped two 13-year-old youths in connection with an armed robbery investigation. The teenagers matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were in the same area at the time of the incident. Body camera footage released by the police shows one of the officers attempting to pat down the teenagers to check for weapons. In a sudden turn of events, one of the teens, identified as Nyah Mway, fled from the scene. The officers believed he was armed and pursued him.
Replica Handgun Misidentified
During the chase, Nyah Mway brandished what appeared to be a handgun at the officers. The police, fearing for their safety, believed it was a real firearm and one of the officers, Patrick Husnay, fired a single shot, striking the teenager in the chest. Nyah Mway was given immediate first aid but sadly succumbed to his injuries at Wynn Hospital.
It was later discovered that the weapon Nyah Mway carried was a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun, designed to fire only pellets or BBs. The firearm had realistic markings and features, leading to the confusion during the confrontation.
Community Outcry and Investigation
The shooting has sparked outrage in the Utica community, particularly among the refugee population. Nyah Mway, a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority, was a student at Donovan Middle School.
The police department is conducting an internal investigation to determine if the officers followed proper procedures and training protocols. Additionally, the state attorney general will be opening a separate investigation to ascertain the justification of the shooting.
