Accident – Death – Obituary News : Utica, a bustling city with a population of over 65,000 residents nestled along the picturesque Mohawk River, has become a melting pot of diverse cultures and communities. Among its vibrant population are more than 4,200 individuals from Myanmar, as reported by The Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting refugees in their resettlement journey.

The Karen community, a resilient ethnic minority group, is one of the prominent groups from Myanmar who have found a new home in Utica. The Karens have a rich cultural heritage but have faced challenges as they are among the groups engaged in conflict with the military junta ruling the Southeast Asian nation formerly known as Burma. The political turmoil in Myanmar, following the ousting of the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, has led to widespread protests and suppression by the military regime.

In a tragic turn of events, a 13-year-old boy named Nyah Mway, a refugee from Myanmar and a member of the Karen community, lost his life in a heartbreaking incident in Utica. The young boy was fatally shot by a police officer after he ran from law enforcement while carrying a replica handgun. The replica, resembling a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun, was later confirmed to only fire pellets or BB’s, but the situation escalated when Nyah Mway displayed the realistic-looking firearm during a confrontation with the officers.

The shooting, which took place late at night, sparked outrage and grief in the local community, particularly among the Karen population. Nyah Mway, described as an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was known for his kind heart and bright spirit, making his untimely death even more devastating for those who knew him.

The incident has raised questions about police procedures and the use of force, with the officers involved being placed on administrative leave pending further investigation. The Utica Police Department is conducting an internal inquiry to determine if the officers followed proper protocols during the confrontation. Additionally, the state attorney general’s office will be launching its own investigation to assess the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Utica, a city known for its cultural diversity and welcoming spirit, has been shaken by this tragic event. The local community, including Nyah Mway’s family and friends, has come together to mourn his loss and demand justice for the young boy who lost his life in such a heartbreaking manner.

As the city grapples with the aftermath of this incident, Utica’s residents are united in their support for the Karen community and all those affected by this tragedy. The memory of Nyah Mway will forever be cherished, and his untimely passing serves as a poignant reminder of the need for compassion, understanding, and unity in times of sorrow and adversity.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Nyah Mway’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace, and may his memory inspire us to strive for a more just and inclusive society for all.
