Shocking Video Shows Fatal Shooting of 13-Year-Old Boy in Upstate New York

A disturbing video released late on Saturday has sparked outrage as it shows a police officer in upstate New York fatally shooting a 13-year-old boy. The incident occurred in Utica, a city located about 240 miles northwest of Manhattan, after the boy had been tackled to the ground following a chase by the police.

The tragic event took place a little after 10 p.m. on Friday when officers stopped two youths in connection with an armed robbery investigation. Both youths, aged 13, matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were in the same area at the time of the incident. One of the youths was also found walking in the road, which is a violation of state traffic law.

The body camera footage released by the police captured the moment when one of the officers attempted to pat down the youths to check for weapons. However, one of the youths, identified as Nyah Mway, decided to run away from the officers.

In a dramatic turn of events, the video shows Nyah Mway pointing what appears to be a handgun at the pursuing officers. The officers, believing it to be a real firearm, acted swiftly to protect themselves and the public.

The police later confirmed that the weapon was a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun, which only fires pellets or BB’s. Despite this revelation, the officers were forced to make split-second decisions in a high-pressure situation.

During the struggle on the ground, one of the officers fired a single shot, which tragically struck the boy in the chest. Despite receiving immediate first aid from the officers and being rushed to Wynn Hospital, the boy succumbed to his injuries.

The incident has sparked controversy and raised questions about police procedures and use of force. The officer who fired the fatal shot, identified as Patrick Husnay, along with Officers Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti, have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending further investigation.

Amidst the public outcry, the police department has released the body camera footage to provide transparency and accountability. The shooting has deeply affected the community, especially the family of the deceased boy, Nyah Mway, who was an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School and a refugee from Myanmar.

The tragic incident has shed light on the challenges faced by refugees and ethnic minorities in the United States. Nyah Mway, a member of the Karen ethnic minority from Myanmar, was caught in a deadly confrontation that has further strained relations between the community and law enforcement.

As the investigation unfolds, questions remain about the circumstances leading to the shooting and the actions of the officers involved. The state attorney general will conduct an independent inquiry to determine the justification of the use of force in this case.

In a statement, Utica Police Chief Mark Williams expressed his condolences to the family of Nyah Mway and described the incident as “tragic and traumatic for all involved.” The community continues to mourn the loss of a young life and seek justice for the senseless tragedy.
